Car Seat Installation Assistance

The Wauwatosa Health Department offers free car seat checks by appointment from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday – Thursday. Our certified child passenger safety technician can provide instruction on installing a car seat or conduct a car seat inspection. Request an appointment online or call (414) 479-8939.

Why check car seats?

While most parents and caregivers are confident that they have correctly installed their child’s car seat, almost half (46%), have been installed incorrectly.

Quick Reminders:

  • Booster seats go in the back seat. Wisconsin law says that children must ride in a booster seat until they are 8 years old OR weigh 80 lbs OR are 4’9″. Children should ride in the back seat until age 13.
  • No bulky jackets. Bulky clothes (winter coats and snowsuits) can compress in a crash and leave the straps too loose to restrain your child, which may lead to increased risk of injury.
  • No slack in harness straps. Loose or twisted straps allow for too much movement in the seat, making the child less secure.
  • Secure the chest clip at the armpit level. If the clip is too low, the harness straps may not be positioned correctly on your child’s shoulders, especially if the straps are also too loose.
  • No “sleeping bag style” car seat covers. These may push the harness out of position, add slack into the harness system, and cause the child to be too warm in the car with the heater in use.

Period Resources

In 2025, the Wauwatosa Health Department initiated a new program for the collection, repacking, and distribution of free period products to those in need in our community. Both new and old community partnerships participated in this initiative, resulting in 1075+ free period kits distributed in our community since March 1, 2025.

The need continues. You can support our community by purchasing needed period products from our Amazon Wishlist.

Note

FREE period kits are available at the Wauwatosa Library (upstairs near the copy machine) or at the Wauwatosa Health Department. One kit contains a month’s supply of pads or tampons.

What is period poverty?

Period poverty is when people can’t get the supplies they need for their period, limiting their health, learning, employment, and well-being.

  • 1 in 4 students in the U.S. can’t afford period products
  • 44% of teens feel stress or shame without access to products
  • 2 in 5 individuals struggle to buy period supplies
  • More than 1 in 3 missed school, work, or activities due to a lack of products
