Forestry

Wauwatosa has over 25,000 publicly owned trees and we are proud to be a Tree City USA. Trees significantly enhance the beauty of our environment and raise our quality of life. Every year, our arborists:

  • remove dead trees
  • plant new trees
  • prune trees
  • treat trees for diseases and pests

Report a problem with a city tree.

FAQs

Our Arborists survey City trees annually. During the survey, Arborists look for dead, dying, diseased, or structurally unsound trees. Trees that are no longer viable are marked for removal. Our annual survey generates 300-400 tree removals each year.

We prune trees on a 10 year cycle. For minor tree issues that arise between pruning cycles, we allow residents to prune branches up to 1 inch in diameter so long as the work is performed from the ground using hand tools.

You can expect stump removal during the Fall. Typically, we begin stump grinding in late August and continue through November.

We manage and select tree species to keep our urban forest diverse and maximize crew efficiency during the spring planting season. Residents do not select replacement species.

In most cases, our arborists plant a new tree for each tree removed. Planting occurs in spring, after tree removal.

We spray hives if they are low in the tree and are a safety hazard. Otherwise, we do not spray bee or wasp hives.

Trees planted and maintained on public or City property are part of our Forestry Program. Generally, these trees are located along City streets within 10 feet of the curb, in City parks, or at City buildings.
