Solar Permit

Solar Permit

Solar energy systems are permitted in all zoning districts and must comply with applicable building, electrical, and zoning requirements.

Most solar installations require an electrical permit, and additional permits may be required depending on the type and scope of the project.

The electric utility serving Wauwatosa is We Energies. Property owners and contractors should coordinate with We Energies regarding utility requirements and approval to connect a solar energy system.

How to Apply

Apply for a solar permit through our Self Service Portal. You can upload required documents, track the status of your application, and make payments online.

Most residential roof-mounted solar photovoltaic systems require an electrical permit. As part of the application, you will need to submit a Solar Worksheet or an evaluation from a professional engineer addressing roof load requirements.

Depending on the type and scope of the project, additional permits or documents may be required, including:

  • A site plan for ground-mounted systems
  • Construction plans when structural modifications are proposed
  • Building permits for certain structural work
  • Plumbing and/or mechanical permits for solar hot water systems
  • Additional plans and documentation for commercial installations

Additional information or review may be required based on the property or proposed installation.

The City offers a limited number of solar permit fee waivers each year for qualifying residential and commercial projects. Waivers are available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning March 1.

Contact Building & Safety or begin your application through the Self Service Portal to determine whether fee waivers are still available.

Contractor Requirements

Solar installations must be completed by properly licensed contractors. Depending on the work being performed, electrical, building, plumbing, or other State credentials may be required.

All work must comply with applicable codes, regardless of whether a separate building permit is required. The installer is responsible for verifying that the existing structure can safely support the proposed solar installation.

Inspections & Utility Approval

A final inspection is required when the permitted work is complete. Scheduling information and inspector contact information will be provided with the permit.

Solar systems connecting to the electrical grid must also meet We Energies requirements. The property owner or contractor is responsible for coordinating required utility agreements, commissioning, and approval to operate.

For ground-mounted systems or other work involving excavation, contact Diggers Hotline before digging.
