Bird City

Bird City

Wauwatosa is proud to designated as a Bird City Wisconsin, joining about 100 other communities throughout the state to protect birds and preserve the habitat they need to thrive. To earn Bird City designation, communities fulfill a specific number of actions across 4 categories: habitat, threats to birds, education & engagement, and sustainability.

Since 2022, Wauwatosa has achieved the prestigious High Flyer status as a Bird City, joining only six other municipalities in the Milwaukee-metro area.

Our Work

Here are some of the ways Wauwatosa supports its Bird City designation:

  • Monitor bird populations in the Forest Exploration Center and surrounding areas.
  • Improve bird habitat through annual and semiannual weed-outs along the Menomonee River.
  • Protect bird habitat by designating Sanctuary Woods as a Special Purpose Conservancy through a zoning resolution and ordinance.
  • Educate residents about sustainability and environmental stewardship through the annual Tosa Green Summit.
  • Promote green transportation by building a bicycle and pedestrian network with 11 miles of bike lanes and 14 miles of shared-use trails, and supporting bike sharing with 16 Bublr Bike stations.
  • Improve energy efficiency by installing solar panels on public buildings and converting city streetlights to LED.

World Migratory Bird Day

Wauwatosa annually celebrates World Migratory Bird Day with a Bird Tour led by renowned area bird enthusiasts. Our 2026 bird tour was led by Chuck Hagner on May 23 at the Forest Exploration Center. This year’s theme was “Every Bird Counts.” Stay tuned for next year’s event.
