About the Program
This is an unpaid, training-based internship where qualified candidates can gain hands-on experience in the field with guidance from experienced professionals. The Intern Firefighter will have the chance to improve their skills in areas like fire suppression, hazardous materials response, rescue operations, emergency medical services, fire inspection, and vehicle and station maintenance, all while being supervised by career members of the Department.
Functions:
- Participates in responses to alarms as a ride-along and will provide support when needed
- Prepares written reports, in addition to other administrative tasks, as directed
- Participates in training exercises and classroom lectures
- Assists with cleanliness of the station and maintenance of equipment
- Participates in demonstrations on fire safety and prevention, CPR, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, first aid, and other subjects to the public
- Participates in fire inspections
- This position requires one 8-hour shift per week, scheduled Monday through Friday. Occasional exceptions may be made to allow the shift to take place on a Saturday or Sunday.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 18 years of age by due date of application
- Valid State of Wisconsin Driver’s License at time of appointment
Additional Requirements:
- Candidates are required to pass the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within 6 months of employment.
- Background investigation that may include fingerprinting
- Applicants will be required to submit to a medical examination consistent with the requirements of the position, which will include drug testing, after an offer of Internship and prior to appointment.
- A two-year commitment for this internship is preferred
Educational Completion Stipend
The Wauwatosa Fire Department will offer a stipend to current interns who finish certain programs. The payment will only be made if the intern successfully completes the program and earns State of Wisconsin certification (fire) or licensure (EMS) while still enrolled in the intern program. No payment will be given for certifications or courses completed before starting the program. Stipends will be paid in full, and interns will receive a 10-99 form each year for tax purposes. It will be the intern’s responsibility to include this when filing taxes.
Intern Reimbursement Plan:
- Completion of EMT-Basic – $500
- Completion of FF 1 – $500
- Completion of FF 2 – $250
- Completion of D/O – $250
- Mid-term paramedic – $500
- Licensure as NREMT/WI Paramedic – $2,500
- Associates Degree in Fire – $750
- Fire/Medic Associates Degree with Paramedic Certification – $3,000
