We routinely test and monitor our water system to help ensure your drinking water remains safe. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) also requires water suppliers to inspect and survey water connections for potential cross connections.
The Cross Connection Control Program helps protect public health and the public water supply from contamination. Participation in the program is required by state law for all water users.
What Is a Cross Connection?
A cross connection is an actual or potential connection between the drinking water supply and a source of contamination or pollution. Backflow prevention is required at points where a potential cross connection exists to prevent contaminated water from entering the public water system.
A common example is an outdoor hose bib or spigot without a backflow prevention device. Newer homes typically have backflow prevention devices installed, but some older homes may not.
Residential Inspections
Residential cross connection inspections are completed during water meter maintenance or replacement appointments. A typical inspection takes 10 to 15 minutes.
Commercial and Industrial Inspections
Commercial and industrial properties are inspected every two years as part of the City’s Cross Connection Control Program.
The City contracts with Aqua Backflow to manage commercial and industrial cross connection inspections. Please cooperate when Aqua Backflow contacts you to schedule an inspection or request information.
